In the years that i’ve used Windows XP i never caught any virus, spyware or anything like that. Even the software to protect me never did because i safely browse the “known good place”. As of lately im under Vista and Tadam what do i get? Spywares while using Firefox. The annoying ads keep coming back and Ad-aware, Spybot can’t find what is the cause of all those pop-ups.I don’t even know what to do anymore i never expected for this to happend while visiting ragezone but it all started there unfortunately and under Firefox too..

I was so desesperate that i ended up renabling Windows Defender to see… and guess what? He actually FOUND the Trojan that was downloading ads… Even said ( This Trojan can be tricky to remove and is considerated hard to remove ) it asked for a reboot and Bang no more ads popping when i browse the internet. Or so i thought because it was only temporary.

CCleaner cleaned all the registry errors from that Trojan. It appear the trojan was installing itself as a windows Explorer help tool but now my question is why it infected mozilla firefox? IE shortcuts are gone from the computer Firefox is default browser and if i could delete Internet explorer i would.

This just reminded me that on a computer when your facing a new Operating System some exploits are still available around and especially when your a windows user ( especially Vista ). So just a reminder to everyone. Update all your anti-virus, spyware killing progs when you can and also sometimes even thought you don’t believe in microsoft tools use them.

Also update other tools like CCleaner for registry cleaning when you can.

*After a while*

The ads are still displayed under firefox and each time it happend you see the process ieuser.exe you kill it in process manager the ads are gone but they come back when you do search and much more using a browser. Then i run ESET NOD32 no virus detected, AD-Aware only cookies related to the ads i delete them but doesn’t change a thing, Spybot says it changed a value in windows updater so i delete the entry and by doing settings for windows updater it set a new entry and work fine again.

I have no clue to what i should do outside of Inserting the Vista disc and do a repair and hope ieuser.exe and iexplorer.exe will be replaced and it would change a thing?

Mozilla Foundation have been around for 10 years. They goal is to promote opensource software. Even thought they claim they are non-profit they still earn a lot of money from Google with every search made by users using firefox browser.

In this page i list most of the Mozilla applications that are been developped and that i have tryed in the past. Most of them are still been used by me thought. I will also list some applications based off mozilla but that aren’t opensource or from the mozilla foundation.

Let’s start with the Browsers stuff.

Mozilla Firefox

First of all i must say even the icon is appealing isn’t that cute? Anyway firefox is not only cute but is also heavily modifiable with Addons Module. Your a blog writer you have multiple blogs? Then use the extension scribefire. You want to keep track of your bookmarks online? Then use the del.icio.us addons. ( They are many others but del.icio.us is the most known )

With the new firefox 3.0 and up releases firefox have a smart query inside the navigation box if you input the name of a site that u already visited he will list similar sites with the name in the url or the title of that page. ( see below )

The browser offer security , anti-popup , themes , addons , extension and whats even more cool it runs on every Operating system. Mac windows or Linux In many different languages you can see for yourself here.

You can also get more details about the feature here.

Flock

http://flock.com

Let me say flock is a copy of Firefox BUT heavily modify.

Flock is based on social and blogging and i must say it’s really awesome not only does it support most of the addons for firefox but it also outclass many of them for example the del.icio.us addon is useless under Flock you also don’t need to install a image uploader addons to social sites.

Flock make a priorities of Yahoo services instead of Google. Even thought Google have most of the awesomes services FlickR and MyBlogLog are owned by Yahoo.

What flock does?

People sidebar including social services like…

Digg

Facebook

Youtube

FlickR

Twitter

Pownce

Myspace

Media Uploader allowing pictures upload to those services…

FlickR

Picasa

PhotoBucket

Blog Editor allowing you to Publish to blog services like…

Xanga

WordPress.com

Blogger/Blogspot

LiveJournal

TypePad

Blogsome

Self Hosted blogs…

Media Mini-Bar allow you to see pictures feeds of your friends on many services and make them in your favorites.

Web Clipboard allow you to copy content from site for later use or to paste them in your blog editor to discuss about it.

Improved Feed Reader allow you to keep track of your favorites sites news.

Mail Reader allowing you to read mails from Gmail or Yahoo and get notified when new mails come.

Many mores including Synching of bookmarks online.

Flock is multi-platform also but not opensource. To have access to firefox3.0 features you have to download the beta version at the moment.

For Ubuntu users who don’t want to extract the archives but rather use a .deb go to getdeb.net

For other users you can check all the versions here.

http://www.seamonkey-project.org/

if firefox is the Stand alone for individual Seamonkey is the corporative version but still free. Seamonkey include Addons on most of is suite software.

Seamonkey Navigator include

Tabbed browsing allowing you to have all your pages inside one window.

Popup blocker the same way firefox does.

Image Manager lets you block images like firefox does.

And more features included in firefox.

Seamonkey Mail and Newsgroup include

Junk Mail Control allow you to kill spamm inside your inbox.

Multiple Accounts allow you to read multiple mail account inside one window.

Set Labels and much more to your mails.

Seamonkey Composer

SeaMonkey’s powerful yet simple HTML editor keeps getting better with dynamic image and table resizing, quick insert and delete of table cells, improved CSS support, and support for positioned layers. For all your documents and website projects, Composer is all you need.

Seamonkey IRC chat

Chatzilla client that is integrated inside the seamonkey suite allow you to connect to irc servers receive files and much more.

Seamonkey was the one i was using in firefox early days i enjoy more the use of Thunderbird and Firefox combined together than this suit. Instead of Chatzilla i use Irssi but anyway thats my choice you might like Seamonkey i noticed a faster speed on it than firefox.

Seamonkey is also developped by Mozilla Foundation and is also opensource which allow you to grab the source code and even more.

It’s also Multiplatform you can see it here.

Songbird

Songbird the next generation Browser and Media Player!

See my French Article about this Media Player and Browser here.

What if i said Firefox mixed with a media player? Songbird is just that nice mix. Songbird is the Itunes opensource version. I bet Apple must be bitting they Nails by now.

Songbird include

Apple Ipod Support Manual Synching or Library sync.

Tabbed Browsing.

Mp3 download 1 click from search engine.

Firefox alike Addons.

Shoutcast radio.

Album Art display.

Mini Player mode.

Last.fm scrobbling to share

Much more…

Songbird is also Opensource and Multiplatform but is not developped by Mozilla Foundation.

You can get SongBird here.

The others apps based on Mozilla technologys!

Thunderbird is a mail client including Imap Pop3 Smtp and much more.

Thunderbird include

Folder views

Tagging of mails

Spam filter

Automated Updates ( Windows users only for Linux and such use the Package manager of your distribution )

Themes

Message Template

Thunderbird is developped by Mozilla Foundation and is also opensource and multi-platform.
